CPSHE Curriculum Intent
CPSHE encompasses Citizenship, Personal, Social, Health, and Economics education. At St Thomas More it is developed once per fortnight to all year groups (with year 7 having two hours per fortnight and at KS4 CPSHE year 10 have three half-terms before switching with Computing, and for year 11 one term.)
CPSHE is delivered thematically over a spiral curriculum with content and topics being taught in a safe, positive and age-appropriate manner. There are six separate strands to CPSHE: Rights, Responsibilities and British Values (RRBV), Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), Celebrating Diversity and Equality (CDE), Staying Safe: Online and Offline (SSOO), Health & Well-being (H&W), and Life Beyond School (LBS).
CPSHE enables our pupils to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. It furthers aims to help them understand how they are developing personally, socially, and morally. CPSHE tackles many of the societal and cultural issues that are part of life in the UK. Our pupils are encouraged to develop their sense of self-value by playing a positive role in contributing to life at STM and their wider communities.
Lesson content and sequencing is developed using the latest DfE guidance and the current trends promoted by the PSHE Association.
Pupils are further encouraged to develop their general understanding, literacy and oracy throughout CPSHE. Where appropriate external agencies and speakers are invited into STM to support with content and events that are tailored to our region. For example, issues like knife crime and e-safety are covered in a sensitive and impactful manner.
